DPM H.E. Prak Sokhon, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led today a delegation of foreign diplomats of 22 countries to Cambodia to inspect the plight of displaced people camps at Prasat Banteay Srey pagoda in Banteay Srey village, Dam Dek commune, Siem Reap’s Sotr Nikum district.
H.E Prak Sokhon and the delegation expressed humanitarian sentiments and deep concern for the plight of the people displaced from the border areas due to Cambodia-Thailand military conflicts. They are mostly pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled, and children, who have been evacuated to safe shelters and relatives’ homes.
H.E Prak Sokhon stated that the Cambodian Royal Government keeps making every effort to ensure that all the people can return to their homes quickly and safely, continue their daily lives, and that the children in the region can return to schools.
According to the National Defense Ministry’s statements, the invasion by the Thai army has forced over 600 schools in five provinces to close, affecting over 170,000 students and over 6,000 teachers. Meanwhile, infrastructures such as health centers, schools, markets, World Heritage temples, gas stations, and other public buildings have also been severely damaged.
Cambodia and Thailand have agreed on a ceasefire that came into effect from midnight on July 28, 2025. The agreement was reached in the negotiation in Malaysia, initiated by the United States, coordinated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, as the rotating chair of ASEAN, and with China’s active participation.
The visit demonstrates close attentions of the Cambodian Royal Government and international community to the plight of the people fleeing the armed conflicts, wanting to see Cambodian people safe and able to return home as soon as possible.
This testifies that Cambodia has been well cooperating with friendly countries to resolve the crisis based on peace and the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by the United States, Malaysia, and China, a crucial step towards maintaining peace and ensuring the people’s safety.
The foreign diplomats’ visit to the border areas indicates that Cambodia and the international community are actively working to help the displaced people and resolve the issue peacefully.
